CHEMOTHERAPY DAY CARE

Chemotherapy is the kind of treatment where drugs or medicines are introduced in the body, which are toxic enough to kill the tumour cells. These drugs are given on saline over a period of 3-4 hours. Chemotherapy day care at Samarpan is a 10-bedded day care center located at the clinic. Most private day cares, do not require more than four hours, as opposed to the overnight stay in hospitals. This four-hour regime allows the patient to go home, feeling lighter than visiting a hospital. Chemotherapy day care ensures that the patient is not reminded constantly that they are a patient, the way a hospital environment would. It is a personalized day care, where the patient has to stay for a maximum of 4 hours- they can come by at 10-11 a.m. in the morning and go home by lunch.

Chemotherapy is given in a comfortable, serene environment, with loungers attached with televisions, where patients can watch films. This set-up is to help leverage their positivity and relieve them from the anxiety and stress of the disease and treatment.

Our day care center strives to make the patients feel at ease, with counsellors and nutritionists just a call away. The staff works towards comforting patients and encourage them to open up and be of support to each other.

We also have a cooling cap, which is effective in reducing hair loss. Patients, who take the weekly cycle of the cap, rarely show hair loss. This is not as effective with patients who take the three weekly cycle. The environment friendly, with loungers equipped with blankets and pillows, and personalized televisions and headphones. They have weekly complimentaru foot and head massages by the Pink Support Group girls. These girls are Breast Cancer conquerors themselves, and have a lot of empathy for the patients. Therefore, they come to the day care everyday and handhold the patients through the challenges of the disease. The patient’s comfort is given top-most priority at our daycare.

Chemotherapy has developed over time to become a much smoother process with minimal side effects. The major side effect, as of today, is hair loss. Earlier, nausea was a recurring problem and patients would vomit frequently. Now, there is not a single patient showing nausea and vomiting. Heavily discomforting side-effects like burning pain or infections have completely stopped.

There remain certain side-effects like occasional reduced blood count, amenorrhea, or other irregularities in menstruation.
